My first Vlog and nice finds
Hello softies, welcome to Soft Spot!
I’m testing Substack and it looks much easier to handle than my previous newsletter, I want to post more frequently, but in a shorter/faster-to-read format. The website format reminds me a lot of my beloved Blogspot, so I’m trying to use this tool with that in mind, although times are different now. We’ll see how it goes!
The first thing I’d like to share with you is that I made my first (and maybe last!) Vlog1 on YouTube.
In the Summer of 2021, I started filming myself while I was working and during my creative process. I have a lot of material and I haven't had much time to edit it, so here’s a video from last summer in which I draw in a new sketchbook, I work on an editorial illustration, and I pack a bunch of t-shirt pre-orders.
I’m used to watching a lot of videos on YouTube and I don’t mind watching old stuff, so I hope it won’t be too much of a problem for you either. Consider it as a sort of time-travel experience. If you’d like to support another crazy side-project, please consider liking and subscribing to my channel, it will help me with the algorithm (yay, another algorithm!).
What if I told you that Illustration is actually a Pyramid scheme?
I did a comic page for the last issue of the Nib, the work issue. My short story is based on my view of the illustration industry: it’s a pyramid scheme! Lately, I see pyramid schemes everywhere, don’t you? If you don’t believe me, you can read it in full here.
Nice stuff
Janik Soellner. I discovered his work recently and I like the freshness of his style. I have a lot of affinity with the way he works. While I was scrolling through his Instagram it made me want to draw more for pleasure, which it’s always a great sign.
Short Box Fair! If you don’t know what it is, it’s an online fair organized by the publisher Short Box (it also used to be a nice blog with great comic reviews). You can buy short comics and longer formats. Being that it’s all digital, it’s an affordable price and it’s a more ethical way to support authors.
I already did my first round of shopping, and I found lots of nice things such as J'arrive! by Mathilde Laillet, Miriam by Bianca Bagnarelli, and Baby, you are fine! by Disa Wallander. I didn’t finish reading everything I got, but I’m very satisfied. There’s time until October 31st to buy something, so don’t forget to check it out!
A few days ago I bought an original illustration and it felt so good! I like to buy originals, but it’s not something I can afford on a regular basis.
This piece wasn’t too expensive and it was too adorable not to. I mean, look at it! So cute. The author is Mocculere and it was on sale at Gallery Nucleus.
Lately, I love to watch ducks and duckling videos. I follow this Twitter account and get a daily dose of ducks in my feed. My grandparents had a small farm in the backyard of my family house, so I’m familiar with them. When I was a child I was used to seeing baby ducklings, chickens, rabbits, and guinea pigs. Maybe I should start a farm myself. But for now, I can watch videos online.
Thank you for reading, see you next time! 🐩
A Vlog is a video blog: early blogging was a sort of public online diary. Vlogs are video versions of the same concept. Watching vlogs is like watching someone’s daily life. In my case, it will be about my working life as a creative.
